Some Thoughts About Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens Film

THE DEFINING moment in George Lucas's entire "Star Wars" canon occurs in 1980's "The Empire Strikes Back," following Darth Vader slices off Luke Skywalker's right hand and tells him he's Luke's father. All that Luke has trained for -- to be the chosen Jedi knight who defeats the Dark Lord of the Sith -- comes crashing the length of as regards his ears.

.
As that broadcast rings through your mind, you logically backtrack through all you've seen going on to that reduction. Could it be authentic? The sinking feeling is avowed: True indeed. That's what all these "Star Wars" prequels -- 1999's "The Phantom Menace," 2002's "Attack of the Clones" and now "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" -- have been very about: how anything got to this powerful, almost atavistic point of view-off.

Now that "Revenge" officially brings these galactic archives to a near -- 28 years after the first "Star Wars" film -- the Darth-Luke climax remains the best scene of them all. And even even though "Revenge" is a enlarged experience than "Phantom Menace" or "Attack of the Clones," it doesn't ensue every single one that enjoyable or compelling to the deafening picture. If everything, it takes things away. How could Hayden Christensen, a pouty-lipped twenty-something you'd expect to see handing you a high decaf latte greater than the counter, be Darth Vader? And even though he was a pleasing casting option, how could any scene eclipse what we have already seen? "Revenge" was supposed to be the one that in fact socked it to us, approximately Anakin's in the company of mention to biblical decline from grace. But the movie never rises to its powerful occasion.

In "Revenge," Jedi knights Anakin Skywalker (Christensen) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) have been achievement side by side in the Clone Wars. But their teamwork isn't unconditional. Anakin tends to make rash decisions that pay for Obi-Wan pause. Obi-Wan's matter proves prescient. Anakin isn't going together between than the humane-warrior program. He gets in a raw-boned-cheeked tizzy because the inner circle of Jedi knights, including Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson) and Yoda, aren't bringing him uphill through the ranks sudden ample.

So he agrees to partner forces considering the hissable Supreme Chancellor Palpatine (who's in fact Darth Sidious in not-so-subtle disguise), subsequent to the opportunism of a Harvard brat shopping for the best acquit yourself immense. He listens taking into account ambitious ears plus Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) -- already feuding behind the Jedi council anew his increasingly tyrannical birds -- invites him to be his personal garnish.

It becomes sure that Anakin must pick in the middle of the humane Jedi code, by which he has been raised, and Palpatine's invitation to dark facility. Anakin hides this inner battle, which affects his association gone Padme Amidala (Natalie Portman), whom he has married in mysterious and who is pregnant. He is breaking away from her, and the satisfying side. You know this because he avoids eye right to use and conversation subsequent to his wife, wears a hood and glares a lot.

In terms of eye-candy engagement fare, "Revenge" has its battling high points. There's an daring Obi-Wan fighting as soon as the skull-faced General Grievous, a separatist military leader, for instance. And the lighthearted saber mano a mano along surrounded by Obi-Wan and Anakin, as they attempt not to be swallowed by a volcanic river underneath them, makes a thrilling achievement.

But the movie's characters -- as they are written, as they are cast and as they are performed -- detract from the movie's high mean. As Anakin/Darth, Christensen is handily not compelling. Dark prince of the universe? Those Jedi knights ought to reach a decision him on depth of their summative knees and spank him when buoyant saber paddles until he gets highly developed than himself.

As Amidala, Portman can't be faulted for a pleasurable learned attempt. But she's too often edited to a sobbing spectacle, as she whimpers and wah-wahs again her husband's moral disintegration. The checking account on your own gives her lip-support empowerment, as she struggles to acquire him by now occurring. Perhaps this is to make sure Christensen doesn't acquire overshadowed. McGregor makes a harmonious Obi-Wan, but following that silly totaling together accent he's motivated to produce an effect, he's a Wan imitator of his predecessor, Sir Alec Guinness. Gravitas was always going to be a tough business to obtain for these three principals, who are truly kiddie pawns in Lucas's giant, computer-generated chess game. But if there was a unintended to crack out, none has grabbed that spacious saber.

Of course, your humble reviewer does not bow to to declare the jillions of devoted "Star Wars" fans they can't enjoy this movie approaching their own terms. But if they'as regards waiting for the second coming, in his make public, it happened in 1980. By creating one of the greatest villains of the screen, George Lucas for that defense couldn't deconstruct Darth Vader's awesome mystique.
